Tolkningar:
Sångens titel hänsyftar på Wim Wenders film Faraway, so close från 1993. Filmen är en fristående fortsättning (Wenders insisterar på att det inte är en uppföljare) av hans film Himmel över Berlin (Wings of Desire) från 1987. Båda filmerna skildrar före detta änglars liv som människor i Berlin, och hur de stapplar sig fram och försöker förstå livet när de nu blivit vingklippta. Filmen är väldigt utdragen emellanåt, men det visuella uttrycket i många av filmens scener är oemotståndligt. Allt som visas ur änglarnas perspektiv är svartvitt och allt sett med mänskliga ögon visas i färg. När jag väl listat ur hur allt detta fungerade blev konceptet bakom videon till Stay mycket tydligare (ledtråd: bandet spelar änglar och Bono blir uppenbarligen mänsklig på slutet). Texten utgår från den hjälplöshet som änglarna känner när de ser hur människornas liv spelas upp inför dem, ”och när jag rör vid dig, känner du ingenting” (and when I touch you, you don’t feel a thing). Texten handlar framförallt om maktlöshet, ”och om du ropar, kan jag bara lyssna” (and if you shout, I’ll only hear you). Änglarna känner till allt som sker men tycks inte kunna göra något för att förändra det. De har sett allt, ”du brukade stanna inne för att titta på reklaminslagen, du kunde mima till pratshowerna” (you used to stay in to watch the adverts, you could lip-synch to the talk shows), vi är som deras barn, men de kan bara se på.
